NECK PAIN

Neck pain in McKinney TX is one of the most common complaints that we see in chiropractic patients. It’s important to determine if the cause is soft tissue, such as a sprain, strain, or bugling/herniated disc, or mechanical, such as joint disfunction or misalignment.

Causes of neck pain varies in nature from poor posture to injury, and everything in between. More and more patients are experiencing neck pain due to technology, and our poor posture associated with looking directly down toward our lap at our smartphone or tablet.

If left unaddressed, you run the risk of an initial small issue turning into a more extensive issue. As the say, “an ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure.”

MIDDLE BACK PAIN in McKinney TX

Middle back pain can be tricky. Is the pain source independently located in the middle back, or is the pain a result of stress and pressure from your neck or lower back? Sometimes middle back pain is not caused by your middle back, but instead by the junction between your ribs and your thoracic spine.

LOWER BACK PAIN

Lower back pain is the other most common complaint Dr. Derrick sees in his chiropractic patients. Like neck pain, it also stems from poor posture to injury, and everything in between.

Technology has played a similar, but also different role with lower back pain. Poor posture associated with looking at our smart devices, but also the fact that more and more work is done in front a computer. We were not designed to sit for 8+ hours per day.

TYPES OF LOWER BACK PAIN

Sciatica is described as a pain that radiates from the lower back to the buttocks and/or to the lower hip and groin area, but generally stays above the knees. Sciatica tends to present as a very dull, but intense nagging pain with a sharper presentation with certain movements. It’s cause could be anything from mechanical and joint dysfunction to bulging or herniated disc.

Bulging or herniated disc is generally due to chronic repetitive stress or acute trauma. Some are asymptomatic, while others can refer pain from the back all the way into the foot. Bulging or herniated discs may also cause weakness and/or numbness in the back or legs.

HEADACHES

TYPES OF HEADACHES

  • Cervicogenic Headaches - also known as Myogenic Headaches, originate at the junction of the the base of the skull and the neck. These headaches may present as ‘band-like’ headaches, and can generally be treated with over-the-counter medication. While cervicogenic headaches may be stress related, at Trinity Health Solutions, we work with these patients to reduce the general neck tension, there by improving their headaches.
  • Tension Headaches - also known as Stress Headaches, are related to high levels of stress and feels like a band wrapped around the head. Dr. Derrick works with patients to relieve overall effects of stress on the body, such as chronic tightness and stiffness.
  • Migraine Headaches - tend to have vascular and/or neurological components, and Dr. Derrick co-manages these patients with our medical side or the patient’s current medical provider.

EXTREMITY PAIN

TYPES OF EXTREMITY PAIN

The Shoulder is a very complex joint. Most chiropractic patients wait too long to seek treatment when they are having shoulder pains, and end up making their shoulder problems worse with an extensive recovery. Dr. Derrick must also determine if it’s a true shoulder condition, acromioclavicular separation, arthritis or referral from the cervical spine.

  • Types of Shoulder Pain - Rotator Cuff Injuries are one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. Dr. Derrick will work with you to determine which four parts of the rotator cuff are involved, and which muscle groups are contributing to the pain. Sprains, strains, or tendinitis in other muscle groups, such as biceps, triceps, deltoids, and trapezius, may cause shoulder pain.

Dr. Derrick will also pinpoint the type of injury, such as sprain, strain, tendinitis, partial tear, or complete tear. We manage these chiropractic patients with help from our medical side and develop a rehabilitation plan that consists of both passive and active care.

Bursitis is not the most common form of shoulder pain, but may be seen in chiropractic patients who have recently taken a fall. The pain can come on gradually or be sudden onset, but it’s important to have bursitis treated before the condition leads to a ‘frozen shoulder’. The condition can escalate into ‘frozen shoulder’ when the chiropractic patient stops using his shoulder due to the initial pain of bursitis, and treatment is not sought. Dr. Derrick also co-manages bursitis patients with our medical side and develops a rehabilitation plan that consists of custom passive and active care.

The Elbow

Types of Elbow Pain

  • Tennis Elbow - or lateral epicondylitis, is tenderness or pain in the outer elbow generally caused by repetitive movement. Common in tennis players, hence the name.
  • Golfers Elbow - or medial epicondylitis, is tenderness or pain in the inner elbow. Common in golfers, but also common in sports with throwing.

Wrist and Hand Pains occur for many different causes, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, fracture of carpals due to fall, sprains or strains, or tendonitis. Depending on the type and cause of the pain, we use a combination of both active and passive rehabilitation care and medical massage.

The Hip

Types of Hip Pain

Bursitis tends to be very persistent when not treated, and is typically seen more in women. Chiropractic Care patients with bursitis have very tight IT Bands (illiotibial bands), and the most common complaint is not being able to sleep on the side of the pain’s location. Dr. Derrick will help determine if the pain is bursitis pain, or referred pain like sciatica.

Joint pain requires Dr. Derrick to source the origin of the hip pain, and determine if it’s related to bursitis, or a possible sprain or strain. Digital X-Rays may need to be taken to rule out degenerative changes, such as arthritis. Once the source of pain is found, Dr. Derrick will develop an appropriate treatment plan or refer the patient to an appropriate specialist.

The Knee pain is generally caused by sprains and strains. In knee injuries, it’s important to determine the extent of the injury- is it only a sprain or strain, and if so, what soft tissue is involved? Is there possible ligament damage? Is the ACL, PCL, or meniscus involved? Is the knee stable? Should an X Ray or MRI be ordered?

Based on thorough examination, a treatment plan can be coordinated or specialist referrals can be made.

The Ankle and Foot

Types of Ankle and Foot Pain

Plantar Fasciitis is the most common type of foot pain, and is generally located on the bottom of the foot and around the arch. Plantar fasciitis can be very painful, especially when getting out of bed in the morning, and is sometimes described as feeling like bubble wrap on the bottom of the foot. Dr. Derrick will craft a custom treatment plan that may include active and passive therapy, medical massage, orthotics, or medical co-management in severe cases.

Sprains and Strains can be very painful and the extent of the injury needs to be determined. In severe cases, sprains and strains may cause ligament ruptures or fractures. These injuries can take 6-8 weeks to heal.

Heel Pain may be caused by several factors including a heel spur or plantar fasciitis.

OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis is the general term used to describe the degeneration of a joint or bone from the stresses of wear and tear. Joints that are mechanically inefficient, or areas that experience a lot of repetitive injuries, tend to develop the degeneration of osteoarthritis.

WHIPLASH

Many chiropractic patients believe whiplash is a result of an auto accident, but whiplash can occur in many situations, like taking a fall. Whiplash is felt throughout the spine and responds well to a combination of chiropractic adjustments, medical massage, and physical therapy. Whiplash recovery time varies, but on average takes 6-8 weeks. It’s important to seek treatment for whiplash to decrease the risk of early onset spinal degeneration.
